Coming Full Circle

There are moments in life where you simply feel things have come to a full circle. It’s like the puzzle pieces have somehow fallen into place and you start to see the bigger picture of what you’ve been working towards creating all those years. Being back in Amsterdam this time has certainly done that for me. Being sat in this little art gallery, coffee in hand, sketch pad and pencil next to it, with a picture perfect view of the Prinsengracht canal right in front of me and waiting for my next Bespoke client to meet me, I’m finally able to see that this is the life I had always pictured for myself.

Growing up in Amsterdam was blessing in many ways, one it took me a long time and much traveling to fully realize the full extent of this. A city known for being a melting pot for people from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds, a place know for not only accepting but also celebrating uniqueness and difference in everyone, a city that celebrates love in all its beautiful shapes and forms. This is the city I’m so proud to have been my nest to grown up in and the city that instilled in me a sense of freedom that still last until this day.

This sense of freedom was also the fertilizer that allowed me to grow into the free spirited nomad that I am today. At the early age of 18 I decided to leave Amsterdam and seek my adventure elsewhere. The travels that followed covered a number of countries before settling down in Turkey, the land where East meets West and the land that welcomed me with streets filled with the smell of spice shops, rich in tales of Rumi and love, and where Ataturk remains the red line in the lives of everyone who lives here. This country was the first where I finally stepped on soil with two feet, having lived a life where I somehow always had one foot out the door, looking for the new adventure and country to jump too.

I opened my suitcase and started to grow roots, choosing a life of freedom to domestic bliss and parenthood. It’s a decision that taught me the value of having your own family and taking responsibility, raising both a child and a number of businesses was a bigger challenge than any of my travels and adventures had ever been!

But something I had forgotten in all those years of traveling and being away from Holland is that I growing up here came with a dream of becoming a jewelry designer one day. In my vision she was a happy woman, one with her own style, carrying her bag filled with sketches and interesting looking gems, creating jewelry for women with a unique sense of style and individuality. I envisioned a strong woman who found adventure through her stones and creations, through the clients she’d meet.

Hitting my 40th birthday made me realize that although I had achieved many things, but here was still this one adventure that I had not yet dared to try. My dream of becoming a jewelry designer was one of the few challenges that had always made my heart beat a little faster and give me slight sweaty palms and actually scared me. I realized that although I had always told everyone around me to go chase their dreams, I had failed to realize this most important dream I had ever had!

Fast forward to today, where I am sat with my sketch pad in this city I grew up in and so dearly love, this city where the seed to this dream was once planted and where it had now grown into a blossoming flower. I can’t help but feel extremely grateful to have reached this point and yet I’m extremely curious to find out where it will still lead me. One thing I do know, I owe this city a great deal for the opportunities it has given me all those years ago and the opportunities it is giving me again at this stage in my journey.

One thing I do know, all those women I had imagined who would give me the opportunity to create jewelry for, have one by one found me and inspired me. I know my adventure has only just begun and I’ll keep you posted on every step along this way…so stay tuned!

Anouk @Nova Diamonds

Born & raised in the birthplace of the diamond trade, Amsterdam, and in a traditional Jewish family, I had been surrounded by diamonds and gemstones pretty much from birth. One of my earliest memories if where my grandma used to take me to mineral & gemstone trade shows and it is exactly there where my curiosity and passion for working with crystal and gems was born. Over the years I developed a solid foundation of knowledge on gemstones and crystals, as well as working with them for energetic and healing purposes.
